8月29日 Granny is in townNo, that's not a misprint. First Grandma (Yvonne) was here, and now Granny (Jo) is here. We took her to mostly the same places, but being as it's my mother we started in Seattle since that's where the coffee is. We had a great time and spent a little more time down on the waterfront rather than at Pike's Market, although we did stop by.
We then took Granny Jo to Mount Rainier, once again opting for the Sunrise trails. It was VERY foggy and cold, but we had to go: Grandma Yvonne threw down the "Grandmother of All Challenges". She hiked all the way to the top of Dege Ridge, so Granny Jo had to do the same. Although Granny Jo made the trek, there's been a challenge on the field: Grandma Yvonne says that the pictures clearly show that Granny Jo had a walking stick, a clear violation of Grey-hair rules. Granny Jo counters that it was far colder and foggier (it's forecast to snow there tonight), so she had the right to a mechanical aid. In addition she had the added hardship of a fear of heights, and so the official's ruling on the field stands: It's a tie. 8月20日 Grandma is in townMarjorie's Mom came this week so we did the whole "Seattle Experience". We took her up to Mount Rainier, to a place called Sunrise. It's about 6000 feet high, and is a pretty interesting drive in its own right, but the real payoff is a hike up one of the trails. After a picnic lunch, we started her off to the ridge with the promise that we would take it slow. She's had some problems with her ankles in the past so she wasn't sure she'd make it - but she did! She was very pleased at her triumph.
Next we took her to downtown Seattle, where we showed her the Space Needle and the Public Market. The Public Market is four stories of a flea market, a farmer's market, and more people than fit the four stories it has. It was a lot of fun. Of course, no trip to Seattle is complete for me unless we stop at Post Alley and get some Seattle's Best brand coffee. Starbucks bought them a while back, but they promise to leave them alone, and so far htey have. I like SBC better than Starbucks, myself.
Yvonne leaves this week, and my mother comes in two days later. We'll repeat the whole thing - and Yvonne has thrown down the gauntlet. She says if she can hike the mountain, so should Jo Anna. We'll see who wins this Grandma-smackdown! 8月12日 Cougar Mountain - First Trip"Grandma" Yvonne is coming next week, and we're still in a forest of boxes. We have a tight schedule, but we want to keep up the habit of trying to go somewhere every weekend as a family. We try to visit a "city" place one weekend, then have an outdoor place the next. Even though we have a ton of things to clean up and put away, we took some time to go visit Cougar Mountain.
Cougar Mountain has a great set of trails, and we're only about 8 miles away. So we packed up the car with trail mix and water bottles and headed out. Christina wants to be a big-game veteranarian when she grows up, so she is really getting into identifying and recording the animals and environments that she is experiencing. She took a bunch of "field notes" on this trip.
You know, a mile walking on the level (or downhill) is really much easier than a mile that climbs over 1,000 feet. But the climb was worth it. We took a detour from the trail we were on to see a set of falls, which are currently dry. It was like a cathedral, and I got a really good picture of it with the light streaming down. God's architecture design still beat's mankind's!
Along the way I was leading the pack when I turned a corner and came face to face (literally) with a momma deer. We startled each other so much we just stood there, but by the time I pulled out the camera she was gone. I did get a couple of shots of her baby, one blurry and one pretty decent one. The baby bounded after her mother like she was on springs once I got the pictures.
Now back to the boxes. 8月6日 Seattle City Center
